Sedation Dental Treatment at Ruby Canyon Dental in Grand Junction

Gentle and Comfortable Dental Care

If you’ve ever experienced dental anxiety, you’re not alone. At Ruby Canyon Dental, we offer several sedation options to help you receive anxiety-free and relaxing dental care.

What Is Sedation?

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

IV sedation provides a deep state of relaxation — deeper than most other forms of sedation — without requiring you to be completely asleep. Although you will not be completely asleep, you may not have any recollection of your dental treatment.

Your Grand Junction dentists have advanced training in the administration of IV sedation; they will monitor you closely throughout your treatment to ensure your comfort and safety. Because the effects of IV sedation can linger for hours after treatment, you must have a designated driver to take you home after your visit.

Preparing for Sedation

Less than 5% of the general dentists in Colorado have the required training and permits necessary to perform Intravenous (IV) Sedation.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a great option for adults and children whose anxiety is too severe for nitrous oxide alone, but not intense enough for IV sedation. We typically administer oral conscious sedation to patients who are receiving short, non-invasive dental treatments. It is also a great sedation option for children because it is less invasive than alternative methods.

Oral conscious sedation requires you to take a small prescribed pill about an hour before your dental treatment. The pill helps you feel relaxed and ready for care. We may also administer nitrous oxide along with oral conscious sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide Dental Treatment - Ruby Canyon Dental

Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is a blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide. Inhaling nitrous oxide creates a sense of well-being and relaxation for those who experience mild to moderate dental anxiety. We typically use nitrous oxide during short, non-invasive procedures.

Nitrous oxide is a great sedation option for kids because it is one of the safest and non-addictive anti-anxiety agents used in dentistry. Your child only needs to wear a plastic mask over his or her nose and inhale deeply to feel the effect of this sedation method — there is no need for pills or IVs! Plus, the effects of nitrous oxide are completely reversed with a few deep breaths of fresh air.
